Freeskier Angel Collinson talks lines, life and AK love

Hallowed spring conditions are brightly settling across the faces of famed Alaska slopes.

The seasonal shift highlights winter recreation at Girdwood, drawing professionals, filmmakers and fans to ski the valley’s iconic surrounds.

Girdwood neighbor and freeski pro Angel Collinson is no stranger to both the work and the play of sliding downhill. A relatively recent arrival to ski-town AK, Collinson is a soft spoken, 2010 Subaru Freesking World Champion, the first female to appear in a TGR film finale, recipient of Powder Magazine’s ‘Best Line’ 2015 and a member of The North Face Global Team.

Today, the skier-next-door shares with The Gazette her thoughts on skiing, life and pursuit of liberty.

A waitress at family owned Sam & Lee’s Restaurant delivers steaming plates to the table and politely asks what has brought us to her hometown. The hope, we reply, is to scout the North Slope Borough, enjoy its Arctic ambiance, and (naturally) pay this visit to the region’s principle city Utqiagvik, known equally by its latter moniker, Barrow.
